Gardeners’ Club

December is a quiet month in the gardening club calendar, with no meeting. It’s a time for winter digging and ordering seeds, or perhaps just sitting by the fire!
In January, on Friday 19th, we have our popular New Year Party, with a quiz, loosely related to gardening, and supper, supplied jointly by the committee and club members. We welcome guests at a cost of £4 each for this particular meeting.
The programme for 2018/19 will be unveiled at the AGM in February, when membership is due for renewal.
Meetings are usually held at Franklin Gardens Community Room on the last Friday of the month, with refreshments served from 7.30 pm, followed by a talk at 7.45.

All Saints’ Cottenham: welcome to Revd Lynda Davies!

The evening of October 16 th saw the licensing service for Revd Lynda Davies, the new rector of All Saints’ Cottenham and All Saints’ Rampton.    It was a lovely and memorable occasion with a full church and some rousing hymns.  The organist said delightedly, “That was the best congregational singing I’ve ever played for: I got to pull out all the stops.”   The Rt Rev David Thomson, Bishop of Huntingdon, led the service with his characteristic blend of  grace and gentle good humour, and Iain Campbell from her former parish commended her to us warmly.   Members of the Cottenham and Rampton community welcomed Lynda, asked her to make sure the church tower doesn’t fall down like it did 400 years ago, and invited her to do crafts with the Brownies.  The service was followed by a fantastic spread of refreshments from the All Saints’ Cottenham team (pictured below).   We are all very much looking forward to Lynda’s ministry with us. ...

The Cottenham Yesteryear Road Run 2018

We are starting to get our plan together for next years Road Run. For those who have not heard of it before, we gather approximately 300 vintage and classic vehicles on Cottenham Green and then travel through the neighbouring villages collecting funds for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity. Last year's Road Run The 2018 event is to take place on Sunday 22 April 2018 At present we are waiting to hear from the Northstowe planners as to whether we can use the old airfield road, However even if we have to change the route we will still need a group of motorcycle marshals to get us round safely and on time. If you think you can help being a motorbike marshal we would be grateful if you would contact us on  vivien.lampard@ntlworld.com We will also need a few people to help as village marshals to guide the vehicles, this is vital in Cottenham, Willingham, Over, Longstanton, Swavesey,Oakington and Histon. District and County Council reports

Rural Travel Hubs:   Following an initial call last year for parishes to suggest how public transport links could be improved, six villages including Oakington have been working with South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) and the Greater Cambridge Partnership to explore how rural travel hubs could work in practice to get more people out of their cars, using public transport, cycling or walking.  Oakington Parish Council may be able to take this opportunity to address some unintended consequences of high demand for Busway services, and its ambition to change the Citi 6 bus route will benefit more than just Oakington. Including a cycleway to Cottenham could widen the benefits even further.
